Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Speech Debate Coach to lead and grow our high school debate program. The ideal candidate will inspire students to master the art of argumentation, rhetoric, and critical thinking, while preparing them to compete successfully in local, regional, and national tournaments.
The Debate Coach will serve as the primary instructor, mentor, and competition coordinator for our 9th–12th grade students interested in competitive debate formats.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement an engaging, rigorous debate curriculum aligned with classical principles of rhetoric and logic.
- Lead regular after-school debate practices (2–3 times per week).
- Prepare students for competitions, including research, case writing, rebuttal drills, and mock debates.
- Organize and chaperone students at local, state, and national debate tournaments.
- Recruit, mentor, and build a strong and inclusive debate team across grades 9–12.
- Collaborate with school leadership to align the debate program with our broader educational mission.
- Foster a spirit of intellectual curiosity, respect, and sportsmanship among students.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Communications, Political Science, Philosophy, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Prior experience coaching high school debate or competing at a high level strongly preferred.
- Strong foundation in argumentation, classical rhetoric, public speaking, and logical reasoning.
- Ability to motivate and mentor students with varying levels of experience.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Willingness to work some evenings and weekends for competitions.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) standards and tournaments.
- Knowledge of different debate formats (Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Policy Debate, Congressional Debate).
- Passion for classical education and character development.
